(1) Safety of the passengers is the prime priority: Mamata Banerjee
Mamata Banerjee, Union Minister for railway, reviewed the safety measures in railway operations with the entire railway board on Thursday.
In the meeting, she stated that “the safety of the passengers should continue to be given top priority as safety never sleeps and any laxity on this will not be tolerated”. She also pointed that anyone found wanting on this vital aspect of railway operation will not be spared.

(2) Matheran Hill Railway Line inspection for World Heritage Site
An expert team of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) led by Dr. Gion Caprez will be visiting India from 24th - 31st October 2009 to evaluate the property of Matheran Light Railway (MLR) for inscription as a World Heritage Site. The team will undertake inspection of steam engine run Matheran Light Railway Train, its railway stations, buildings, sheds, nominated/buffer zones.
Matheran Light Railway, connects Metheran( hill station) with Neral station at the midway of the Mumbai-Pune road. The Neral-Matheran hill railway line has 221 curves with only one small tunnel on the section and endowed with several interesting features of engineering skill. The line climbs 720 meters in zigzag track and the rails used are very light hence the name Matheran Light Railway.
